Product Feedback

Hey Chicas! How is your hair journey going?

I want to introduce this Coconut Cowash by As I Am. This product is amazing!!! So I just had to let you know about this product!

As you know I am very big on NOT shampooing my hair very often. I don't want to strip the hair from its natural oils. Even though I use non sulfate shampoo I would still only shampoo my hair once a month. Well, lately my scalp have started to itch a lot and it got to the point were I decided to use Head & Shoulders one time to see would that help with itching, but it didn't.

So one day I was watching MahoganyCurls on YouTube and she talks about using the Coconut CoWash, so I decided to try it! I could not be more satisfied! This product is absolutely a product that I would continue to purchase. This product is a replacement for shampoo. After I washed my hair with the CoWash, I still used my Trader Joes Conditioner to detangle. The CoWash made my hair super soft, it felt clean and my scalp do not itch anymore! I was very pleased to see that I did not have to use a lot of the product, so I know this 16oz jar will last me a while.

I washed my hair like I would normally do. I separated my hair in 4 sections and soaked my hair with water. I mainly massage my scalp with the Coconut CoWash and worked it into the rest of the hair. I made sure I rinsed out all the CoWash before I applied my Trader Joe's Conditioner to detangle.

I got this product at Sally's beauty supply for $7.99. I also saw it on Amazon for the same price.

Do you oil your hair daily?

If you don't oil your hair daily, you are missing a vital hair maintenance! We have tightly coiled hair that is fragile and gets extremely tangled. Keeping the hair moisturized helps soften the hair and lessen it from any breakage from the use of shampoos, combing, and styling. Also the longer the hair grows the dryer the end of the hair gets, so oiling the ends of the hair daily is very important for split ends. If you don't have split ends then you don't have to trim the hair. The last time I cut my hair was a year ago. I never really have to cut my hair ever since I gave up weekly use of flat ironing, oil daily, and do heatless styles.

Hot oil Treatments are great for the hair before or after shampooing. Saturating the hair with oil, place a plastic cap over the hair and seat under the dryer. The heat will lift up the hair cuticles and allow the oil to penetrate the hair shaft. This is great to help with dry scalp, prevent breakage and split ends, this is definitely a must if you use relaxers or straighten all the time.

Soooooo u know that I use the African Pride Olive oil mix from Sally beauty supply, right? So I decided to take it a little further and create my own Shea butter cream...I'll let you know how it goes and be sure to post a video!

Natural Heads Stand Confident

Don't let people's negative comments deter you from rocking your natural curl pattern. Being natural is more than just healthy hair, for African-American women we were always taught to use relaxers and never taught to accept our kinky hair. Our hair is beautiful just the way it is, altering it to make it straight doesn't make it better hair.

African-American people are so different than other ethnicity. We come in all skin shades and beautiful hair textures. We are just amazing; rather you know it or not.

For those with a more curly and courser hair type, I have news for you because I know you get the most heat for going natural. Your hair is awesome! The fact that your hair have tighter curls and is courser, you can style your hair and it last longer than a person with a looser curl texture. You can do so much more styles with your hair than any other hair textures. You just have no idea! So be confident, different and have fun with styling your natural hair!

Below is a Hair Type Chart. This is helpful when purchasing styling hair product.

*This post was inspired by my cousin that relaxed her hair after listening to negative comments toward the texture of her hair.

I'm a Transitioner

Yes, that's right! Im a transitioner! I never had the courage to do the BC (big chop). Luckily I did not have a bad outcome of not cutting it out. I know there are some that experience a lot of breakage or the relaxed hair and natural hair is not blending well. So it just depend on the hair if you should cut or not....or if u have the courage too! lol.

While I was tranistioning I was initially flat ironing my hair every week! That was so bad and I didn't know all the damage I was doing to my hair. That heat is the worse! My hair was always dry which resulted to breakage and split ends so I was always going to clip my ends. So I decided to make a change, and go without flat ironing. I start using Cold Wave Rods. I loved them! I had a really cute curly fro that last forever. Now since my hair is much more longer, my hair take forever to dry and I never have time to seat under a dryer.

So the best way to cover up that little new growth when you have a lot of relaxed hair is to use rods!

See how I do my Flat twist out

Check out my video on How I do my Flat Twist Out! I love doing the flat twist out style! Its a great way to not use heat and great for transitioners! Click on my link below!

Hair Products

There is so many hair products out there, one can really get confused on what products to purchase. And not only here there so many, but they can be pricey! My suggestion is to not get all into the hype with buying all of those expensive products. Remember natural hair is simple! The only thing you will definitely need for natural hair is something that will define your curls.  I use the Curls Unleashed, I love it! It holds and give shine. But because everyone hair is different I would try other products like Shea Moisture (found in Walgreen's), KinkyKurls (a little pricey, in Target), and Miss Jessie (expensive, but ppl love this product. find in Target)! Target and Walgreen's are starting to carry a lot of styling creams for African-American hair, so try one that works best for you!

When purchasing a Shampoo and Conditioner remember to always get one without sulfate...that sulfate is known to strip the hair from natural oils. The natural oils are very important to prevent split ends and breakages. I always buy more conditioner than I do shampoo because I co-wash weekly and shampoo monthly. Hint: If you take care of your hair correctly, you will barely have to cut it!

Oil is very important!!!! I am not all into making my own oils and creams so I just purchase oil from Sally's beauty supply. I'm so lazy! One day I will start. lol. Oil hair daily is very important. What I do is when I step out the shower I just oil my body including my hair. The oil is a body and hair oil so it goes everywhere! Hint: I also use it to remove makeup! Olive oil is a good makeup remover.

A lot of natural girls are not a fan of gel, but I am!...I like for my edges to be smooth. I mostly use gel when I'm pull my hair back in a clip or up in a bun. I don't think gel is that bad as long as you don't use it to death!

Natural hair loves WATER!!! I always keep a water bottle and mist my hair with water daily. The moisture is great and keeps the hair from drying which cause breakage.

Hair Products that I use:

Trader Joe's Shampoo and Conditioner $2.50/bottle

Curls Unleashed $14.00

Hair and Body oil from Sally's Hair Supply $6.00

clear Eco styling Gel

DON'T BE AFRAID!! Lol!

Why are black women so afraid to go with out relaxers??? lol! I hear these 3 comments all the time, "Oh my hair is too nappy", "Your texture of hair is better than mine" or "I just can't do it". I use to say the same thing! So when I hear it, I always get amp! YES, YOU CAN!

For someone thats been getting relaxers all their life, I have to admit it takes some adjusting. But I want to show you the change is for the better! I want to help educate african-american women to gain healthy long hair because I would never put a relaxer in my hair ever again! My hair is the strongest its ever been.

Here is my simple hair care regimen:
NO relaxers
I do not flat iron my hair regularly. I flat iron my hair 3 times this year Nov. 3, Aug 30, and Jan 14
I do not shampoo weekly, I co-wash (washing with conditioner) weekly
I use shampoo once a month
I oil my hair daily with a body/hair oil
I spray water on my hair daily
I use a satin pillowcase

Even if you are a person that do not like your kinky hair, you can still do without a relaxer and just straighten your hair with some hair serum and flat iron and achieve the same affect. Weekly flat irons are still damaging but not as much as doing both relaxer and flat ironing.

Why I decided to go without relaxers

I used relaxers all my life, until I found out I was pregnant with my first child at 24. I didn’t want to use or do anything that may harm my child. So I decided to go without relaxers and just flat iron my hair. I could not believe that I went a whole nine months with out a relaxer. lol! Its funny that my thought process back then was my hair isn’t all that nappy.

After I came home after giving birth in January 2009, I was so exhausted to do anything including my hair. And you know everybody comes over your house to see the baby when you get home! Well one of my family members (dont want to give a name) told me that I need a perm and my hair was nappy! OMG! Do you know I listen to that person and relaxed my hair (Feb 2009)!!! I felt so stupid instantly after rinsing out the shampoo. I went so long without a relaxer and it was ruin because I listen to someone’s negative comment. I promised myself to never let someone’s comments change my mind about being natural. I have to learn to accept my nappy kinky hair just the way it is. I knew that this will be a journey because I had no idea how to care for natural hair but I was willing to learn!
